Nivalis Nights Romance Guide: All Romance Options & Dating Mechanics
How romance and relationships work in Nivalis Nights: the four confirmed relationship types, who Ava is, what the developers have and have not confirmed, and where relationships play out.
In a city of 130+ voiced characters, the relationships you build are meant to be as important as the business you run. The developers have confirmed the kinds of relationships available and that your choices decide which you get — but they have deliberately not published the mechanics. This guide separates what is actually on the record from what the internet has invented, and will be expanded with real numbers once the game is out on September 29, 2026.
- • Four outcomes are confirmed: the developers state you can build a friendship, a rivalry, a business partnership, or "something more" with the people you meet.
- • Choices decide which: the kind of relationship you get depends mostly on what you do during interactions and in that character's side quests.
- • It changes the journey, not the ending: relationships shape how you reach the main story's endings and how side quests resolve, but the main story still lands on a defined ending.
- • Numbers are still unknown: no rapport values, gift tiers or per-character gift lists have been published. Anything quoting exact figures is guessing.

🌹Named Characters Confirmed So Far
Over 130 voiced citizens populate Nivalis. The developers have confirmed the four relationship outcomes, but they have not published a romance-candidate list, gift tables or rapport numbers. Only a handful of characters have been named publicly, and only one of them is described as someone close to you. What follows is what is actually on the record.

Ava
Your guide to the city
Ava is named in the official release trailer as the person who will look after you when you take over the noodle bar: "Ava will look after you. She knows which docks have the best fish. And which streets have the best toys." That makes her your introduction to both the fishing trade and the city's shops — a business contact and guide before anything else.

Salt Pete
Robot ferryman at the docks
A tall, blocky robot in a straw hat with two large glass eyes, who runs a makeshift ferry he claims is "the safest, cheapest way to cross the bay". He is cheerful but has a mean streak he does not hide, and bickers constantly with the other harbour robots. He loves hearing passengers' stories and rarely talks about his own past.
📈The Four Relationship Outcomes
The developers describe four kinds of relationship you can build with the people of Nivalis, shown directly in the official Q&A footage as on-screen captions: friend, business partner, rival, and "maybe something more". Which one you get depends mostly on the choices you make during interactions and in that character's side quests.
This is the honest state of the system before launch. There is no published rapport scale, no numeric thresholds, and no per-character gift table — so this guide describes the shape of the system rather than pretending to know its arithmetic. It will be rewritten with real numbers once the game is out and the values can be measured.
Friend
Confirmed outcomeBuild a community rather than a ladder. Thaddeus Carmunis frames this as one of the two ways to live in the city: look after the people around you so they are a little less miserable. Expect this route to lean on side quests and on being present rather than on spending money.
Business partner
Confirmed outcomeThe developers confirm business relationships have economic effects: buying more often from a given vendor can earn you better prices. This is the relationship type most directly tied to your venue empire, and the one worth cultivating early while your cash flow is thin.
Rival
Confirmed outcomeRivalry is an intended relationship, not a failure state. The game supports sabotaging competitors under cover of curfew, and the developers warn the reverse holds too: what happens to them can happen to you. Treat rivals as a risk you choose to take on, not a problem to be eliminated.
"Something more" (romance)
Confirmed outcome, mechanics unknownRomance is confirmed to exist. What is not confirmed: the candidate list, whether any character can be romanced by any player character, gift preferences, or how the relationship is gated. Relationships influence how you reach the main story's endings — but the main story still reaches defined endings either way.

🎁Gifts and Food: What Is Actually Known
Gifts and shared food are part of how relationships grow — the developers confirm that how you interact with a character, including in their side quests, is what determines the relationship you end up with. What they have not published is a gift-tier table. There are no confirmed point values, no "loved/liked/neutral/disliked" buckets, and no per-character preference list. Anyone quoting +30 or −10 is inventing it.
What you can plan around before launch is the food system itself, because that part is documented and it overlaps heavily with the relationship loop. These are the officially named dishes, and the one confirmed rule that constrains when you can serve them.
| Named dish or category | What is confirmed | Why it matters for relationships |
|---|---|---|
| Summer Salad | Officially named. Strictly banned outside the summer season. | The only confirmed example of a seasonal menu rule, so timing your gifting matters at least for this dish |
| Ramen Noir | The name of the noodle bar you inherit, and a recipe shown on the official tourist map | Your signature dish — the one you start the game able to make |
| Cola Chicken, Meridian Pizza, VegCoffee | Named in the official "what's on the menu" post | Confirmed real dishes across snack, pizza and drink categories |
| Nine categories | Meat; fish and seafood; salads; sandwiches; pizza; soups; desserts; snacks; drinks | Some dishes are more exclusive and appeal to a more refined clientele — useful when hosting |
| 190 meals, 240+ ingredients | Official counts, with recipe unlocking and customisation confirmed | The ceiling on how much variety you can eventually offer |
🌆Where Relationships Actually Play Out
There is no official list of date venues. What the game does confirm is a set of spaces and systems that relationships are built around, so these are the places worth investing in rather than invented "romantic hotspots".
Your apartments
You can rent more than ten apartments, from a studio to a standalone house on Calypso Island, and decorate every one of them with the game's 620 furniture items. Some apartments come with basic furnishing; the rest is yours to shape.
Your boat
Fishing is done from your own boat, day or night, and when exhaustion sets in the boat serves as a place to rest and spend the night. Access to the waters is tied to knowing the people who work the docks.
Your venues
Restaurants, ramen bars and nightclubs are where you meet clientele and business contacts. Venue decoration affects how welcoming a place feels, which makes it part of the social loop rather than pure decoration.
The districts
The developers are explicit that exploring districts is essential if you want to untangle the interconnected stories of the city's characters. Meridian Market, Skyhigh Gardens, Seaside Boardwalk and the Docks are the confirmed areas.
One practical warning: the curfew is real. The official footage ends its "what can you do" tour with a reminder to respect it, and the developers confirm day and night life offer different opportunities for exactly that reason. Plan evenings accordingly.
